Alright, I saw this picture in a Sparta cd insert ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/35511638@N00/71301871/ ) and thought it would look pretty bitchin' to render stuff like that. The colors are all flat, it's just my dumb scanner that messed with them, so just pretend. The black outlines on the silhouette and wrinkles in his shirt is no problem, the only problem I can't seem to tackle right now is how to do the coloured bits. The problem is, in some areas it draws outside the lines, and some it doesnt draw right up to them. Some drawing accuracy is lost in spots bigger than the markers brush is. No inside areas are not filled in, it's ony around the edges. Since overlapping colors would look the best with lighter colors being overlapped by darker ones, I'd like to seperate the "areas" that are being drawn based on color, and then draw them lighest to darkest. There are some parts, like on the right of the guys coat, the gray part by his tie, that look kind of crappy and I'm not to worried about rendering. Alot of this could be done well with random numbers, but random doesn't look consistant (i.e. not crappy) from frame to frame. I'd really like this to be smooth. I thought about making a quasi AI to actually "draw" the colors onto a 2D texture, but after a bit more thinking and experimenting I've decided it would be too slow. I can get a list of verticies that make up the areas to be drawn, i.e. from that picture the guys hair, and since everything is unshaded it would be sufficent to preform the perspecive distortion stuff and get a list of 2D vertices that would show on the screen, which could be some help. I've tried things based on sine waves for distortion of the lines, and like a billion other things. My next attempt is going to be taking the 2D verts of each "polygon" (like, counting blocks of color as one polygon, so his hair would be one polygon with lots of points) and smoothing the vertices out, maybe adding a bunch of extra ones, and filling that with some solid color. I don't know. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is the second day I've been at it and it's really bugging me. I've googled all over the place and can't find anything that helps me. Thanks.

Hi,

Are you aiming for something along the lines of this?

I have not done anything similar myself ...yet ...but for google terminology, you might want to search for "painterly"

Wow, that is a pretty awesome shader. I'm looking to make it look more simple though, no shades whatsoever, no wobbles, just black lines (that I can do :P) and smudges of color, so it looks like it was drawn with magic markers. Thanks for the link though, it gave me an idea of how I could possible do it with shaders, infact I think it's potentially the best way... we shall see...
