Is Java 3D obsolete?

Original Post
2 years ago I bought the book "Java 3D API Jump-Start" by Aaron E. Walsh & Doug Gehringer from Amazon. When I got it, I found the code extremely difficult and tossed the book aside. Now that I know 10x more Java than I did before, I am considering taking another look at my "forgotten" book. My only concern is if Java 3D is still in cirulation like other popular API's. I do not want to learn an API that might be shunned-out by Sun in a couple of months. Your opinion?
Take a look at the JOGL OpenGL bindings instead. Java 3D has been expected to be declared dead since around 2003.
Java3D is officially being deprecated and JOGL is officially being merged into the Java spec. As to when this happens, your guess is as good as mine.

...except that Java3D is a scenegraph API, whereas Jogl (and the more reliable LWJGL) are pretty much straight OpenGL interfaces. If you want a more current equivilent then you might want to try Xith3D or JMe
I'm talking about the official 3D API of java. Sun will be nixig J3D for JOGL.

Do you have a source to confirm this? I googled http://java.sun.com and didn't see anything mentioning this. I certainly hope this is true though. I'd far rather use JOGL than Java3D.

google "java3d replaced by jogl" later. The site is currently down for "maintenacne" [sic]. Yeah, that's great. It's definitely an official change from Sun.
Everything in java seems complicated to me. Not to say difficult, but unneccesarily complicated.

what api is looking glass programmed with?
Java3D. A window is constructed, and the renderer is replaced with Java3D's scenegraph node so the widgets can be rendered in 3D.

Technically, its not. Sun open-sourced Java3D last year when they announced Project Looking Glass at JavaOne. At least, I think it was at the JavaOne convention.
