Hey guys, What's your favorite medieval weapon? Personally, i like those huge viking axes. Once an axe is in motion, you can really block it with any other weapon.

1° Crossbow
2° Francesca (tougher to aim)
3° Sling

But it is much easier to evade, and the swing time is slow enough for a piercing attack with a sword.

archery is cool. I did have a go when I was younger. I recommend it. Equipment can be expensive if you go crazy, but you can start cheap. Arrows are expensive though. They often loose bits, and then it's glue time! It's a good sport.
Everything is better with Metal.

A mace? Agreed, something about that weapon scares the crap out of me. I'd be considerably less scared of a heavy claymore swinging clumsily at me.

But you can sure as hell step backwards.

The word you 2 are looking for is a flail (ball on chain)

You're talking about a flail. Oh, and the style you see in like "Kill Bill" with the 5 foot chain, are useless as a real weapon. you can't control a real one like that.

Swords, under THREE pounds is common, Over 5lbs is uncommon. I don't know of ANY sword over 11lbs, and it wasn't a weapon, but a status symbol.

I've always liked poleaxes, work best with a 5foot one, narrow axe blade.

By the way, I remember some sort of metallic spear, the only goal of which was to strike the enemy's shield. Then, by walking on the spear, the attacker could force the enemy to lower his shield (with the spear deeply set into it) so he would be able to strike without opposition.

Ah, what now? how is that suppose to work? You think someone is going to sit there and let you jab their shield with something, then LET you stand on it? no, they're going to be moving, and triping you while you try to stand on their shield, and then they're going to brain you with whatever weapon they have.
(This isn't to say sticking a spear or something in a shield won't hinder them in anyway, it was common, making them discard their shield, or be weighted down by it. Roman phila (sp?), a short throwing spear did that fairly well. Also had this great advantage of its tip bending after being thrown, meaning you couldn't throw it back, but fairly easily repaired after the battle)

I really think ALL fantasy writers/game desigerns should, by law, be required to fight atleast ONE fight with REAL armour and blunted weapons before they're allowed to do anything. "you can't run in full plate mail!" is a common thing I hear on some sites. well, yes, you can't really run in real full platemail. :P Platemail doesn't exist. It is poor research done by Victorian era where mail ment armour! :D nope, mail derives from words meaning net/chain/mesh/web. so go off and don your chainchain and your elf ears.
