Noooo! Google!

Most of you have probably already seen this from slashdot: Google is going to start displaying banner ads. Images. Not just the normal unannoying text ads. That sounds really terrible. The fact that it's Google makes a big difference. Going from "our only ads are plain text" website to HUZZAH BANNER ADS is going to make me sad. At the very least I hope they won't add flash based and animated ads.
Here's an article about it. According to the article:
"None of the so-called banner ads will appear on Google's home page or alongside its primary search results."
So it doesn't sound like it will be that intrusive. I mean, what's left besides the home page and primary search results? Maybe GMail, but I can handle that.
Anyway, it seems that Google wants to open up AOL's instant messaging market to play nicer with their own.

I don't get why people complain about Internet advertising. If you're using Firefox, install adblock. If you're using Opera, use Filter.ini. Seriously, don't complain if you're too lazy to install a blocker.
If it gets annoying enough, we can go raduprv and organize a boycott. Not of Google, but of their ads. If general purpose adblocker like adblock work so well, it wouldn't be that difficult to write an extension for Firefox (in fact, I'll bet the people who made CustomizeGoogle will do it) that blocks ads for Google.

They'll sell targetted banner ads on websites. You know, those websites that have google ads on them ?

I'd laugh if they put the ads in www.google.com/wathever/ They could make them quite hard to block by using a periodically changing scheme.

I usually don't want to block ads. Sometimes websites need the money. I'm not convinced that Google does.

Ah, well that I don't have a problem with. I still doubt that even being images they'll be that noticeable compared to those annoying shoot the gopher popups, but we'll see.
I'm quite amazed that Google has not plastered banners ads all over the front page already. The amount of money they would make would be astronomical. Of course, everyone would throw a fit and slam Google for it. The thing is, are you really going to stop using Google if they did? Would you go back to Yahoo or Lycos purely to prove a point?
Google are in an interesting spot right now. Everyone has become so dependent on their service, they could flood the front page with ads if they wanted to, and the amount of users that would stop using Google would be unnoticeable. But how far could Google go before people started using MSN search (or one of the new ‘Google topper’ search engines) instead? How much could Google really get away with?

I started using Google way back years ago when it was no name, back when altavista, yahoo, excite, etc were kings. There were 2 things I liked about Google search:
1. fast search (even showed the search time, pretty cool back then)
2. simple web page (i hate web sites with billion things on them)
If they were to loose the simplicity of it by adding ads, Google just wont be Google to me anymore.

Just test by image size/location then. Hopefully they wouldn't dare use ads that randomly change dimensions and page location from time to time. That'd be irritating for reasons other than blocking them.
Never mind, they'd probably just have them link to something like google.com/outgoing.cgi only replacing "outgoing" with random text. :(

Maybe. There are a lot of other good search engines out there. And often they find things that I couldn't find with Google. Google's simplicity and the fact that it doesn't "feel" as capitalist as a lot of other websites are what I find to be some of it's most appealing attributes.

I use adblock, so I probably wouldn't notice if they had ads, but if it loses its simplicity feel that it has, I'd consider switching. The only reason I use google is because they don't have crap everywhere. If they change, then I might as well use any other search engine.
Yeah. I gave MSN Search a try a few weeks back. It works. Well. I still use google because I prefer its look, nothing more.
