Hi all I am just wondering if there is any advantage to using SDL.NET with Visual C++ Express 2005? Thanks

The real question should be why use C++ when you could use C#? [wink]

As for benefits of using SDL.NET over SDL, I'd have to say primarily the object orientation and the easy to use interface. A lot of the library was inspired by PyGame so there's a lot of built-in functionality that isn't provided in normal SDL.

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I never really considered C#, as I am just getting the hang of C++ after about two years off and on programming. No means a pro mind you! I hear that C# is similiar to C++, so maybe it might an option? Is it gaining popularity as a game programming language?

Definitely. If you've got even a decent grasp on C++, learning C# shouldn't be very difficult at all. Plenty of hobbyist projects, and even several commercial products have been made with C#, giving a pretty good indication of what it's capable of.

Additionally, SDL.NET is a very nice choice for 2D gamedev in .NET. I'm using it for a project of mine currently, and it's dripping with functionality. ;)

I checked out Kainwall, it looks very cool. I am currently working on a 1942 clone using SDL, but may see how it codes under SDL.Net.

I look forward to a demo of Kainwall, good work!

If you decide to look at C#, check out Tao, which will give you C# bindings to: Cg, DevIL, FreeGLUT, GLU, OpenAL, OpenGL, SDL, WGL
