They're both packages that a lot of shareware developers have used (quite extensively).

If you're leaning towards the blitz-basic way of doing things, then be sure to check out their new release of Blitz-Max.

It was rewritten to accomodate more cross-platform games for Mac porting (BlitzBasic is just for Windows).

But give them both a shot and see what's easier/best for your projects.

I used to program a ton in DarkBasic. I thought about using BlitzBasic, but when I was looking at all their functions and stuff, DarkBasic has more DLL's you can use to upgrade your program. It provides more functionality, and also the forums seem to be a bit bigger for DarkBasic. The big draw back of DarkBasic though is that its debugger really sucks. You can ask anyone on the forums there and they will agree. Anyways, thats my 2 cents. I haven't really used BlitzBasic, so I can't say which is better.

even though i'm learning c++, i still use blitz3d and i have to tell you, blitz3d is very easy to use. every 3d object is organized in entities. the only downside to blitz3d is that it's technology is tied off at directx 7.

i haven't programmed in blitzmax yet but i've heard that it's a very stable language. beware, blitzmax has journey away from basic into the vast world of object oriented programming.

don't even think about getting blitz plus. it's pretty much dead.

i do not recommend dark basic because every time their support gives a patch, 9 out of 10 times, something will go wrong. of course i haven't used dark basic in over a year so the support might have improved a bit.

there is a upcoming language called the cobra. it's syntax is a mix between delphi and blitz basic, it supports dx9 features, and it even allows you to compile the cobra source files to assembly. the cobra has not been released yet. the developers are saying that it should come out early next year. i wouldn't suggest waiting for the cobra unless you're not in a hurry to start coding.

well, i think i pretty much gave my opinion on the different basic/slightly non-basic languages. read about each one, do some research, and try out the demos. hopefully i'm been a bit of a help. the links are provided below.
