A.I. for platform

Hi all, I program in GML(GameMaker Language by Mark Overmars). I am attempting to create artificial intelligence for a platform/shooter. The concept is about a character(the player) using guns to duke out his enemies(which are other players and bots). However, I cannot implement this. Could someone post me concepts and examples?
