ok I need to connect my Dvd player to my DLP HDTV and I have a bunch of composite cables and a S-video cable. what I want to know is will spending 30$ on component cables really make a big difference compared the the composite and S-video I already have?

Well, composite means to have one wire for both luminance and chrominance. To avoid interference the luminance signal is filtered, making space for chrominance. Nevertheless luminance could interfere with chrominance in cases of high frequency, making colors appear where no colors are. Moreover, the filtering limits the bandwith of the luminance signal. In consequence composite video is bad.

S video has luminance and chrominance separated, and hence doesn't suffer from the both problems mentioned above. It has still mixed the both channels of color into chrominance, and the chrominance is lower bandwith than the luminance (adapted to the human visual recognition). The mixing of the both color channels could be reversed without loss in quality, as I recall correctly.

Component video drives 3 wires, namely the luminance and the both color channels separated.

I suggest not to use composite video. Using S video could pleasure your needs. I don't expect component video showing a significantly better quality than S video, but perhaps a practical test may show.
