If anyone was actually wondering, I resolved my system issues by buying an ATI radeon x800 xl. Goodbye Nvidia. This new card is ridiculous! I tried the farcry demo at 1024x768 with all the options set to max, and it ran flawlessly. By the way, that game is sick! I had so much fun with the way you aren't given a linear killing path, you actually have to storm beaches and attack squads and whatnot. It was sweet, I'm definately buying that ($19.99?! Excellent, guess that's a start at making up for the $300 OS which required a $300 graphics card just to run properly (more or less) ). Quake 4 ran fine as well. I wasn't too impressed with that, I mean, I got startled a number of times when those aliens would come charging at me from the shadows roaring, but overall it just felt really linear and simple-minded. Won't be buying that. Anyone have any other good game suggestions (preferably, but necessarily, 19.99? [grin])? I really like rpgs (preferably medieval), but i'm not feelin' the whole MMORPG scene due to the monthly subscriptions (IE, I don't want to support the idea of games as services, I want to buy something off the shelf and just have it work in it's entirety for as long as I'm interested in using it)

Honestly, I never really "got" why everyone loved Far Cry.

Go get Morrowind.

I run far cry at full on my 6600GT :). I love Far Cry. One of my favorite games. Really allows the tactical imagination and killer instinct run.

Play the F.E.A.R. demo, it's short but cool, and free, and you'll get to push your card a bit. I also like suggesting Painkiller to people, though it's not what you asked for. Check out the demo at least.

Edit: Also, use at least 1280x960! I play most things at that and I only have a 9700 Pro. High resolutions mean you don't need FSAA on (you can only notice in screen shots, not while moving), so the framerate doesn't really change and I think it looks better.

Hi,

Why not wait a little while and get Elder Scrolls: Oblivion? You said yourself you liked medieval RPGs and this game looks so good I bet it will push your new card!

Mount and blade? Won't push the card but its medieval and rpg and good. There's a free demo that goes untill level 6, and its cheap.

I have no rpg suggestions, but if you aren't bored of WW2 FPS games yet (can't get enough of them personally), Brothers In Arms 1 & 2 come highly recommended. MOH Pacific Assault is also a good one for the "oooh-isn't-it-shiny-ladies-and-gentlemen"-factor, but not quite as tactical.

Alternatively, the new version of Pirates! is highly addictive & probably in that price bracket by now.

And when it has gone past me I will turn to see fear's path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." ~Frank Herbert, DuneMy slice of the web

I would suggest a very, very graphically enhanced form of Snake.

I'll put another vote in for Half-Life 2.

You might like Guild Wars then. All you have to do is get yourself a valid CD-Key/account (you could probably find one with an eBay Search for about $20). The seller will send you the information and then you can download the client and play.

NWN is awesome! I've been playing 6 hour shifts of it (off and on) for the past 22 hours! I'm going to sleep (and if anyone has an idea on my other post...)

According to this oldish article on video cards from Tom's Hardware, the Radeon x800 xl doesn't do HDR. My next computer is going to have a Geforce 7800 GT because that will. It's a pretty lame/arb reason to choose that over the Radeon (apart from the cost), but I prefer functionality over performance.

Not that I have anything with against ATI. My current card, the Radeon 9600 Pro, performed pretty solidly when I do anything. It is pretty useless in doing pretty much anything that is highly intesive, though, because I have same amount of really low performance RAM on motherboard than DDR RAM on my Graphics Card. [bawling]

Anyway, I would recommend going the whole Guild Wars, World of Warcraft and CS: Source route. Can't really go wrong much.
