Well, I'm slightly bored at work here, so I'll start a little thread here. What are a bunch of words that make you shake your head and lose your faith in humanity? What are some things that people say to elevate themselves or to pose as something they're most definitely not? What are some things that you find yourself doing that you kinda have to chuckle at later on because it was pretty stupid? My turn: "Chic." This word always makes me do a double-take when I hear it. It has found its way into the dialect of American wannabe/yuppies, no thanks to things like HGTV, but it's just as silly as the names for drink sizes at Starbucks. "No ma'am, it's doesn't just look nice; it looks chic." "Sellout." In all my life, there is only one group of people whom I have deemed "sellouts." That group is Metallica and the classification falls mostly on Lars. Really though, I haven't used the word for anyone or thing else. Personally, I really have to humor people who do see things this way and use such a term so frequently, and I'm still always astonished when someone actually does. It's just funny. Along with this, I'll give you guys a story. :P I am not yet an EMT, but I do work in two fire departments. Now, we had a medical call that I responded to, though I'm no medic. We arrived first and were followed later by the ambulance. One of the paramedics came in and, after getting some info from my captain and the patient, told me to go get him his "monitor." By this, he meant an EKG monitor. So I went to the ambulance, didn't really know what to do, and brought him a radio... The medic looked at me, his mouth agape. "Well sure, you can monitor things with that; I mean, it's got a scanner for all the emergency channels on it but.. It's not much of an EKG monitor now is it?" PS: I have my EMT course this spring semester, so..yeah. :P Okay guys, your turn.

All these words that are said by 14 year olds both on these forums and on Counterstrike, piss me off more than anything!

"Visual Basics" - This just pisses the hell out of me when I hear it. It's Visual BASIC for crying out loud! Anyone smart enough to pass Grade 5 would remember that, upon hearing it. Using "Visual Basics" shows complete and utter ignorance so well that I always correct people at every possible moment when I hear it, and if they keep using it after about 50 corrections I spaz out on them. Probably not the best idea in the world, but it usually gets the job done.

"Scripts" - This word annoys me when I hear it used to describe source code for non-scripting languages. It's fine for movies, game scenarios, etc., but when used to describe VB and C++ source files... just annoys me so much. I realize it's irrational, and I don't even know why it pisses me off, but it does.

"program" - This word really gets me confused when it's used out of context, like "scripts". For example, my grandmother (although, she cannot really be blamed for this) once asked me to program Microsoft Word into her computer (the correct word was install. Needless to say, I was a little confused, and I told her that it would probably take several months for me to write a clone of MS Word. She then looked even more confused than I, and said that she just wanted me to put it into her computer. I laughed, and explained. She just looked at me kind of funny, like I was using the word 'dog' when referring to a cat.

I'm amazed you have the patience to correct them 50 times. I think most people would give up after 5 times.

The best thing about the internet is the way people with no experience or qualifications can pretend to be completely superior to other people who have no experience or qualifications.

Back in the day, people used to receive source code in computer magazines, and would then type this source code into the computer and save the program on a floppy disk. So if one wanted a word processor, one often would indeed "program it into the computer".

Yeah, if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try again. Then start knocking skulls.

[lol] Another one that always got me in a class that I dropped was "object-orientated." Geez, why don't we stretch that word on even more if we're going to say it like that? Instead of object-oriented, why not say, oh, "object-orientizatificized"? Eh? Why not, if we're going to start adding syllables here? Silly. [smile]

"Warsh"

"Missouruh", the "uh" as in "uh-huh"

"Evolute" instead of "Evolve"

Instead of "multiply the two numbers", some people say "times the two numbers." This seriously annoys me, and I don't know why.

-arrrg it has to be the classic "General Consensus". Please, could anyone explain to me how a consensus can be anything BUT GENERAL!

Sorry, i have to get this off my chest:

My grandma keeps saying she has "Old-timers"

I just want to pull out a book and show her the word but I know it won't do any good

It made me wince when my science teacher said "It's a neither-or situation."

People who tell me that I've spelled emigrate wrong (emigrate and immigrate are opposites).

People who say see-plus instead of see-plus-plus

This mostly pertains to American speach, but adding on syllibles to words that don't need them. Like saying Communistic instead of Communist. Orientate instead of orient. Problematical instead of problematic. Fantastical instead of fantastic.
Sometimes I say "Communistificatalizified" to spite them [grin].
