I used DevIL (OpenIL) briefly... wasn't a huge fan of it. But in any case, their website on SourceForge has a very good documentation / quick start section.

Yes, a google search for opengl devil turns up at least 10 articles for exactly that, including two from the devil help files.

I'd be interested in anything you come up with. I've been struggling with this for a while now. Although I got the textures to load with DevIL, they arn't displaying correctly in the Ortho environment.
