I am aware that common hardware requires the height and width of a texture to be a power of two, eg 8, 64, 512 etc. So I can have a texture of size 8 X 8 or 512 X 512. But can I have textures of size 128 X 512 or 128 X 16 etc on common hardware (Geforce 2 or 3) and without ARB or NV extensions...??? I'm not having an issue with texture sizes, it's just a question that is buggin me away from my PC. Thanks

Yes, any power of two and any combination (of course there is an upperbound limit)

There are extra libraries you can get which allow arbitrary sizes, but they may be more trouble than they are worth as you can just store multiple textures in one image and display it in parts with a proper texture manager.

There has never been a requirement that textures be square.
