GoogleOS a reality!

Well, at least Goobuntu is. Based on Ubuntu. Wonder what MS has to say about this.. hmm :P
MS's reply? Probably "meh, whatever"
I would totally use a Google Operating System.
The Register article makes the link between the meaning of Ubuntu in the Zulu language (humanity to others), and Google's capitulation to China to include censorship of political hot topics in that country.
How do you say "Aspires to be Microsoft" in Zulu?

So it's a Linux distro with Firefox and a Google wallpaper preinstalled? I am not impressed.
Google can bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the table when it comes to user interfaces and marketing. But they will still need some major strategic alliances to become a serious threat to Microsoft Windows. But who knows..

The same would have been said about IBM before MS rose to power too.

I didn't see anything that said that.
Nobody knows what Google will/did/can do to the distro to make it different. For all we know, they are just wetting their feet so they can make their own distro, or maybe even their own OS. This article says nothing of what they are doing beyond making an Ubuntu-based distro.
I wonder how long it will take to get out of beta.

It will be interresting to what this will turn into, if they release it, I will definatley try it, just because all Google's other products were very good.
other than their web search, I find most of google's "products" to be nothing more than flashy toys, of which there are much more featureful versions available from other companies.

Exactly. The only thing we do know is that they have presented a Google Pack. The single fact that they are working on a distro, doesn't mean anything. I bet they're working on a lot of things. I can only comment on actual information or products released by Google. So far, I know that bundled a bunch of software and probably looking at a new distro. But maybe you're right, instead of my bitter irony, I should have posted a bunny wearing a pancake. :)

exactly... anyone actually use Google Talk? [grin]
Dude, You're Getting a Google...
Google is apparently also hooking up with Dell, although the artice does not dellve (pun intended) into specifics. Obviously to have more integration of Google products in new PC's I would think, but it's interesting how the Linux development will play into this. Linky

hrmm I don't see how this is going to benefit the OSS movement, as google could do much more helpful things for OSS than make yet another distro. Things like:
1. Releasing the source code to their desktop utilities
2. Porting their utilities to *nix
3. Putting market pressure on other vendors, to release specifications/source code to the general public
4. Google talk for linux, with webcam support.
5. *nix IDE which depends only on layer that's portable across all windows managers(like gtk+, or qt), and supports multiple languages.
this just doesn't seem like a step in the right direction.
