This is not so much a game design question as it is a game interface design question but would you consider buying a controller directed towards FPS games and the need for numerous buttons within easy reach and all under the control of one hand for your left hand (mouse - right) which essentially replaced the keyboard and provided a larger number of keys in a much more ergonomic way?

I've never bothered buying one but it would simplify things.

I think the reviewers agree too: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DC643/102-8351749-8318529?v=glance&n=172282

I think that is basically what you are describing...

Personally, I would not. I'm quite happy with WASD and a mouse with lots of configurable buttons, and a desk uncluttered by superfluous controllers.

I seem to recall there is something like this, a sort of glove-type thing with buttons sitting underneath where your fingers go. Not sure what it's called though, and I don't know how successful it was either.

EDIT: ^^^^^ that's the thing. Although I seem to remember it having a strap or something so it actually attached to your hand.
