I've been out of game development for about 4 years now, and clearly a lot has changed! I'm now trying to catch up with everything, and for my first project, I'm building a 2D game engine for the sole purpose of scripting it with Python. Python and scripting are my current focuses right now. I have a lot of experience with game development, and have even developed a custom scripting language of my own (years ago), but am now looking to learn all I can about the state-of-the-art with Python game scripting as it stands in 2006. Can anyone point me in the direction of the best Python game scripting resources (tutorials, even books, etc.)? I want to know what all of the most relevant issues are. I'd even like to pursue a game development job in the coming years, and scripting and Python is something I'd like to specialize in. Anything related to game scripting and Python would be great. And the more advanced the better! Thanks!

These days, it seems that LUA is becoming more popular than Python in the GameDev community. I can't really compare it to Python, though, because I've only used Python.

You should check out Stackless Python, though (http://www.stackless.com/) It seems to provide an elegant way of using microthreads to allow a large number of independent agents to operate concurrently.

Also, I reccomend looking into Boost.Python. It makes extending and embedding Python much easier and cleaner than it would be if you were to use the Python/C API.

People who use Python tend to write the app in Python and use C to extend it rather than embedding Python. This is because Python is a little too bulky and slow for most people to want to use it for scripting, and the bindings are more difficult to work with than they are in several other languages. So unfortunately I don't know of any resources that talk about what you're after.
