What's the easiest way to get the entire screen of a game to Fade to white using DirectX 8.1? I was thinking a white screen sized quad that starts out fully transparent and increases in opacity with each frame. Any other suggestions?

Yep, that sounds about the easiest and fastest way to me. You can do gradients quite easily too, if you are interested in that. Check out the sample shaders in the Nvidia SDK for info on that.

Are those Nvidia specific?

Nope, they are just general HLSL shaders. Although if you are using D3D8.1, you are gonna have to retrofit them, as they are only D3D9-compliant.

Actually, the easiest way to do it is to just specify different colors for the vertices on the top than the bottom. This way, the rasterizer will do it for you. So yea, much easier than those shaders, for you especially.

I'd use the big-quad method; it's reliable and trivial to write, although you may lose a bit of speed on older PCs at high-resolution from the substantial overdraw. That's most unlikely to be an issue so I wouldn't recommend shaders unless you have a special reason - like wanting to make the effect more advanced later on.

I'd agree with that. I've had issues with shaders rendering differently on different cards.

Thanks
