Stuff for making your own games? the tools are pretty simple, any sort of compiler for whatever sort of programming language you intend to make it with, and [if applicable] any tool to make the multimedia components [if you have multimedia. Text games don't have this part obviously]. To get a list of tools, you really have to narrow it down a bit from just 'some game'. But, a background in any language will be absolutely necessary, so pick one that you think is interesting, learn it, and develope the basic syntax and computer understanding that is required to program anything at all.
Then start thinking about games, and the tools required from there will likely be much more obvious. For graphics you have any of the uncountable quantity of painting programs [anything from ms-paint to gimp to adobe photoshop], for 3d stuff you've got a number of options [my personal favorite is maya, its pretty easy to learn, and quick to make things decent, with good tools for reducing polygon count]. For sound your options are really open to you, my personal favorite is Sonic foundry. But you can really use whatever you want.
Picking game-making tools is like picking out a good pen, your priorities should be only that it works, and that you are comfortable using it, and enjoy using it. From there, anything goes.
