I think you'll probably get a better response to this one in The Lounge, it's not really a standard Help Wanted request, so I'll move you over there.
As for classic games, I don't think a history of videogames would be complete without a mention of Tetris and Prince of Persia among many others.

it shouldn't be too ilegal.
TOO illegal? As in, only a little bit illegal? Lol ;-)
There are many milestone games, depending on what kind of focus you want. You could write a history of gaming for consoles, for PC, for arcade, etc.
For PC, I need to mention games like the Sierra adventure games, lucasarts adventures like Monkey Island, revolutionary FPSs like Half Life and Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Doom 3. These are all late-to-modern-day games that should be added into the next big "history of video games" book to come out. Also in the near future I'm sure we can expect to see Unreal 3 on this list.
If you are looking more into Console games, Goldeneye for N64 needs a mention, as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog games, The Super Mario series all through NES and SNES and N64 and GC. Final Fantasy VII should be on that list for being the first successful 3D RPG... and let's not forget the original Duck Hunt!
Like I said, this is a broad, sweeping topic you've chosen to write about. You may want to put a little more focus on one specific area.
Pitfall
Tetris

Joust
Final Fantasy
Virtua Fighter
It may also be a good idea to look at the technology. For example, the atari 2600 was the first game system to use Microchips instead of circuits, giving them the actual ability to make different titles, then there's Sega's X-Band. Possibly the first console medium for online play. Just a few ideas.
