Are you planning on running this out of your home or are you looking to rent a server?

Fair Warning: Managed hosting is not cheap.

A middle ground is co-location; often you can install your own machine and have it managed by the datacentre with redundant bandwidth, electricity, etc. Often co-location is much more expensive than renting a server, but it gives you absolute control of the machine, its hardware, and what's getting run where.

If you rent a server, be careful to make sure that it's not being run under virtualization (many firms that provide Linux plans, at least for a very cheap amount, are merely running one Linux box virtualized into four) and that it is dedicated and well supported. Good providers include The Planet (where both GDNet and my webserver run) and Rackspace (which is significantly more expensive).

In my experience, Windows managed hosting appears to be more expensive than that for Linux, on the average.
