I think I'm posting in the right place because this involves math. I want to make my character walk. My game is a 2d sidescroller. I want to figure out what patterns there are in the motion of walking so that I can implement them and use them in my game. I don't want pre-generated animation, but a pattern so I get the basic movement. Then, I can make the character lift his leg higher to get up on a higher surface. So my question is, mathematically, how does a person walk?(side view, 2D)?

A person walks however you interpret them to walk.

Are you asking how does stepping itself work?

Or the physics of the entire body as it walks?

Do you want to do a skeletal muscle/joint simulation of walking?

A person walks with their brain.

There are generally 4 states in walking

Left leg forward, right leg behind

Both legs next to eachother, left leg on the ground

Right leg forward, left leg behind

Both legs next to eachother, right leg on the ground.

The stepping. I get the mechanics of it, but I don't know how I would implement all of the joint positions and the angles of the extremities.
