Don't worry, you get used to the katakana/hiragana. I still have trouble sometimes with katakana as they are not seen as commonly as hiragana. Be extra careful of
these:
katakana so ソ n ン tsu ツ shi シlooks pretty much the same, don't they?
is it just me or does the kanji for kami and the katakana for ne look the same....?
神、ネ。
As I mentioned somewhere else, katakana are all pieces of some kanji or other. In this case, the 'ne' katakana is a somewhat common radical that shows up on the left of many kanji, including the one for 'god'. Others:
社:company (会社, 'kaisha', company)
祖:ancestor (祖父, 'sofu', grandfather)
視:inspect (直視, 'chokushi', facing directly)
礼:politeness (失礼, 'shitsurei', rudeness)
福:blessing (福笑い, 'fukuwarai', weird japanese face toy thing)
