I've been reading about XDMCP lately and my initial thoughts were that it would be an excellent way for me to connect to my linux box while at work, just as I use RDP to connect to my windows box. I would use it for a variety of reasons, and I won't be graphically logging into my linux box that often, as I also have SSH ready and running. So, it seemed rather silly to hunt down a VNC server for linux and client for windows, figure out how to configure both when XDMCP was already configured on my linux box, thereby cutting out half the work load. Yeah... I'm not having much luck. First, I haven't yet found a non-commercial XDMCP client for windows that is also feature complete and not cygwin. Why not install cygwin? I've had bad experiences with it in the past. Total system failure after uninstalling it. Second, XDMCP seems to be a total pain in the ass to get to work over the internet. Third, I CAN'T FIND A GOOD CLIENT (erh, I didn't say that one already, did I?)!!!

I tried with considerable (read: a hell of a lot) of effort to find a free X server that wasn't Cygwin.

Long story short? Forget it. Cygwin or bust.

I've had good results with XDMCP in the past, but it did involve a considerable amount of adhockery to get working well. I really would suggest you consider installing a VNC server. What it does is, the VNC server IS the X server; it just translates calls between X and VNC. It's a snap to install and use.

Install FreeNX on your linux box and grab the windows client software on NoMachine's website. I've used FreeNX myself. It's pretty good. Very fast, even over low- to midlevel consumer DSL. I use it to troubleshoot my parent's Linx PC so that I don't have to visit them all the time [grin]

I tried xdcmp/cygwin/colinux in the past and wound up using vnc. xdcmp worked okay, but the cygwin client wasn't so. I would crash occassionally, causing me to lose my X session. At least with VNC your session stays active between connects unless you log out. Also it's easy to install TinyVNC or even use a java vnc client in order to connect to your box no matter where you are. XDCMP *seems* to be the best way to remote into X, but in my experience it's not worth the hassle. At least not on windows. I've never tried it from another linux box.
