Why isn't there an equivalent of the highly successful internet movie database for games? People could independently vote on games and not be misled by game review sites which are not independent.

Why don't you read the reader reviews on those review sites?

I'll take reviewers over user votes any day. "OMFG this game ddint hav bloom or hdr or speccaler or anythin, it gets 4/10"

By the way, Amazon has pretty much exactly that.

Psh, that doesn't even work for movies. Look at IMDB's message boards; they're a freaking disaster.

but the votes on the IMDB are pretty accurate to me. If enough people vote you'll easily sort out the biased people. Although people that vote are biased in some way. What would be funny though is similar to movies to see which game designer has worked on which titles.

You do realize that the purpose of IMDB is not to review films, but rather to provide a detailed, accurate reference for all film productions (eventually), including cast and credits, revenues (if released), involved production parties, etc.

You also realize that, for games, that pretty much just describes MobyGames? Or that IMDB now includes video game credits, when available?

I didn't think so. C|NET/GameSpot/GameFaqs provides user reviews, but that's a self-selected sample (then again, so is IMDB), and who knows to what extent the main site review influences those opinions.

If you want aggregated game reviews, just use Metacritic.

I also like to look into www.gamerankings.com. It contains links to different reviews on the web and their respective rating.

(just visited metacritic, looks nice, thx for the tip! :)

IMDb covers games as well... DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D...

Check out the review on the front page of Doom II. This is a perfect example of why I trust professional reviewers more than random internetters :-)

In 1993, Doom was a big hit. It changed the face of RPGs, with its amazing true 3d walls, landscape, etc.

Fascinating.

I don't agree with this sort of thing. Everyone is biased. However, being biased does not entail being incorrect. You must also consider that the total bias of a population does not necessarily sum to zero.
