Here comes my own problem. I am aiming high. Way too high for me right now. But I have patience. Not much tiome on my hands at once, but I don't care how long it takes, so... The plan is to create a MESH of webgames, with a unique database accessed from all games, and modified by all games. To make it plain, I'm trying to design a sort of metagame. One part of it would be an adventure game, a second part of it would be farming game, a third part could be a game of commercial warfare. To make it plainer, different gameplays for different games, but with a single "world", for lack of a better word, to happen in. I want the adventurers to gather resources BUT NO MONEY, and I want them to sell them to cratfers and commercials. I want the farmers to produce goods and sell them to crafters and commercials. And I want the adventurers to have to buy their goods from crafters adn commercials. With any chance, this kind of dynamic will create interaction between the different games, and it will help better mankind and playerdom. But the main trouble comes from the database. I know NOTHING about databases. Okay, maybe nothing is a little too strong a word. But I don't know much. I know what are the columns that should be filled, but I don't know how to create one, appart from Excel. And I don't know if it is possible to make it accessible from three different points. And I don't know if it is possible to have the database updated as often as possible (which I hope to be as often as trades happen...). In fact, I would like to have a dynamic market, with an average price evolving from sale to sale, and a possibility to choose from different sellers. I would like your opinion on how to handle this.

First off, Excel is not a database, its a spreadsheet. Microsoft Access is an example of a database, however it is not really suitable for what you want. What you need is either Microsoft SQL Server, or mysQL.

These will do exactly what you want, they are what power google, and can be accessed from millions of games at once, never mind 3.

Basically every time you add information to a database or retrieve information from a database, you perform a "query". A typical webpage, example the gamedev forums, will perform about 5 - 10 queries for every page viewed. These queries take franctions of a second to complete, eg the "post message" page is reporting it took 0.1572 seconds to display, and it probably had to do 5 queries to make the page. Bearing in mind there are multiple people on the forums at each given second, the database is handling probably a few hundred queries a second with no problems at all.

So as you can see, a database will easily allow you to do updates as soon as a player performs an action, such as selling or buying an item.

Good. SO MySQL is my friend, here. I'll start researching this right away. Thank you very much...
