I have a 250GB external hard drive. On it, I have all of my CDs, DVDs, pictures, game save states, etc, backed up on it. I have backed up all this data onto DVDs (about 50 so far) in case of hard drive failure. Also, I have much more than 250GB of data, so my hard drive was filled up. This is a painful process. I was reading about iFolder (from Novell) that was recently released for SuSe Linux, which I use on one of my desktops. This computer only has about 40GB storage, though. iFolder allows you to access your data from anywhere in the world as long as the host computer is reachable. It can be accessed through a web browser, so no software needs to be installed on the computer you are connecting with. I am thinking of buying a server to do this. My budget is < 1000$. I was looking at the Dell webpage, and they seem to have some good deals. I was just curious if anyone here at Gamedev has a server? Any recommendations or good offers? How difficult is it to set one of these up? Is a server the solution I really want? Any info would be good :) Thanks.

I'd probably go for a bunch of 300GB sata drives in software raid 5 with a lowcost motherboard and processor and 512mb of ram. You could get 6 such drives and the rest of the components for under $1000 giving you 1.5tb of storage. You don't really need anything really powerful or special for a storage fileserver as far as I know.

Pick one of these for your server.

You don't need anything powerful for what you want. Just throw in a big hard drive and you're set.

I have been looking to sell some hardware I have that I had orginally planned for a server. I am no longer in need of this hardware.

EDIT: My HTML tags aren't working for some reason... theres the adress though^^

VIA EPIA CL It has a 2Ghz VIA C3 CPU, 2 ATA ports(up to 4 drives), build in video/audio/network(2 Ethernet ports) and a PCI slot if you need a PCI board with SATA ports or something for more drives. It is also extremely quiet and runs very cool. And its made by VIA, so it consumes very little power compared to Intel and AMD's chips, which is cool when your leaving it on all the time.

Lemme know what you think and PM me.

I have a server that I use for serving MP3s to my network, runs Apache, MySQL, my SMTP server, Filezilla and a few other things. It's nothing special - An AMD 1700XP+, 768MB RAM, 80GB + 20GB drives running Win2k. I'm going to get OpenBSD put on it (when I get around to it), and put a 250GB drive in to replace the 20 gig one.

I'd buy something used, the least expensive you can find. It doesn't take much CPU to steam files. Then buy 250GB SATA drives (best price point right now, 250GB w/ 16MB cache running around USD $90) to your heart's content and the cards to support them and you're good to go.
Estimated Price Maximum: $300 + ($0.40 * StorageGB)

Spend as little as possible on the hardware except for the disks. I'd go for the cheapest that can handle SATA drives in RAID and spend all your money on big drives. Alternatively, try to get your hand on old servers that get discared at companies. That's how I came to own three HP NetServer Dual PII's with hardware RAID's in nice front-loading disk cabinets [smile]

Sounds like an normal ftp server?

Get a 2nd 250gb harddisk (80-90 euro), buy something like 'rhinosoft
servU' and you can also access your files from anywhere you have
an internet connection (and ftp-client).
Get a cheap computer if you want it running somewhere independantly
of your main computer.
