This isn't about game development but it is about java development! How would I go about making a webcam applet for a website? I would like to have the website setup so people register and then once signed on they would be able to see a list of whos on webcam and they would be able to turn on their own webcam? any help would be very helpful! I have looked for some free scripts but I haven't been able to find any so I guess I will need to build one my self unless some one would be willing to write it or tell me how to do it!

JMF (Java Media Framework), though some people complain a lot about it...

I agree with Son of Cain. Sun's implementation of JMF is horrid. I know this first hand as I'm involved in a re-implementation of it.

A quick search on Google turns up the following:

http://www.gnome.sk/

http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/

Both of these seem to be libraries that allow access to scanners, cameras, and such.

Good luck!

Are you looking to provide webcam software as part of your web site?

Personaly I would not spend much time writing my own webcam software. Your time is better spent supporting network cameras and webcam software packages. All of these packages are very easy to interface with. With the time saved you can focus on the design of your web site, and webcam rebroadcast software... a rebroadcast server of some sort will eventualy be needed, as I am sure your users will not appriciate even 20 users nailing their webcam. They will expect you to provide a serice to offload the bandwidth.

Ask me any question you like. I have helped design/implement a solution very simmilar to what you are looking to do.

btw... I agree JMF is/was a nighmare. I have not used it in 3+ years but back when I did I ended up decompiling it, analyzing the structure and then bypassing all the top layers of 'helper' classes to get at what I needed.

I really don't know for sure. If you go to www.jmeeting.com thats the type of thing I want to do. with that you don't download any software or anything it is all done through a java applet.

Thats a pretty nice app. If you really want to know how they are doing it you could always reverse engineer! http://www.kpdus.com/jad.html

As for capturing video it looks like they are using JMF for *nix systems and DirectX for Windows.
