Some of you may have noticed a simple poll in my signature over the last few days: [SIGPOLL: Can I have a dollar?|||(yes)|||(no)|||(you're grounded)] At last count, the results were: yes:7 no:7 you're grounded:18 apparently I am to go to my room without dinner and have no TV privileges for a week. Anyway, I was intrigued by the results, as a full 78% of respondents chose a "joke" reply, "yes"* and "you're grounded". I was a little upset, though, as the poll also showed that some people will screw with shit just because they can. I didn't code the poll too securely, I knew it, I didn't feel like making the effort. I did take precautions to ensure that failures in the poll would not leak over to anything else on my site -- only the poll would be hurt. Apparently someone at a Finnish university felt it was necessary to attempt to make my poll crash. They voted "no" several dozen times (I lost count), and from multiple web browsers. I'm not sure what happened after that, I think my host my have deleted the poll data file believing it to be related to a DOS attack. I expected something like this to happen, but it just goes to show that some people just can't leave well enough alone. If you're out there, just because something isn't 100% secure doesn't mean it's an invitation to fuck with it. I will be contacting the administrator of your university network. Hopefully you'll learn an important lesson from this. *If you did not believe "yes" to be a joke answer, my paypal address is webspynner_99 at yahoo dot com. :)
