When I became a GDNet+ member I used PayPal to pay the annual subscription. I have come to regret that. I believe I'm still a ways away from needing to renew my subscription, but if PayPal is the only way to do that when the time comes then I fear I must take a pass. I get a stream of spam from PayPal. I find particularly annoying the alarming messages saying act now to avoid dire consequences. When they first started with this I checked my account and the only charge was this subscription. As they continued I cancelled the account. Yet these messages still continue. It does not instill confidence and trust in their service, but rather nothing but distrust. It doesn't inspire me to believe they are deligent, but rather that they are clueless. I have cancelled the acount, I have written to them telling, without any reservation, that any attempt to use this account is absolutely fraudulent and yet it continues. My experience with them has made it only possible for me to believe that if anyone did manage to get unauthorized access to my account that they would have free reign of the account forever. I will never use PayPal again and if that means not renewing my subscription here then that is simply regretable.
Those messages about changes to your PayPal and act now to avoid consequences are most likely phising scams. I just ignore those. You can tell because those links they tell you to click on will point to sites like http://574892938479249/something.cgi.
What I find most scary about PayPal is that before I signed up, I never got any PayPal phishing spam. Then after I signed up, it's like the phisers knew I had an account and I get at least 2 or 3 of them a day, and I'm notorious about security, especially on my dev machine.
I've never had trouble with my account, with one exception -- even if you cancel your account, and then sign up again, you find out that they still have all your bank account and credit card info on file (the only thing you need to do is get verified again). I don't like the fact that they keep all that info once I cancel my account.

Are you sure the messages are are actually coming from paypal. I get almost no mail from them, but I do seem to get alot of phishing scams that look like they're official messages from paypal.
I tend to just forward everything I get to spoof@paypal.com Paypal then either confirms that it's either legit or fraudulent.
Regardless, if you don't want to use paypal, this page suggests that you can either mail a check to gamedev or fax a credit card number to pay for GDNet+.

Yup, sounds like phishing. Are you reading your email in HTML? Always check the source and check the URLs. I'll bet they don't point to paypal.com at all.

Nope, I don't follow the links and I don't really care if it's from them or simply setting up an account with them. Thanks for the link, I'll mail a check for renewing.
I have never had a PayPal account (nor any other payment related web pressence), and I get 10-15 of these phishing emails related to PayPal every week. I wouldn't suggest swearing off PayPal just because of those, as I get them about (currently in my spam folder): AOL, CNN, Bank of Nova Scotia, Chase Bank and Kagi [grin]
That's interesting, yet unsurprising these days, that phishing emails would be sent out. I've never received those talking about PayPal. I have, however, had legit emails from PayPal where I was asked to verify information, and I made sure it was actually from PayPal before I did anything about it.
