Okay, it's been like 5 days and i still don't know how the fuck to get this OpenGL crap on: - I have Borland Delphi 2005 - I want to use OpenGL for game design I would think that these two conditions would be easier met than game programming itself - which is a pain in the ass as it is. IF I CANNOT GET THIS WORKING SOON - I WILL REQUIRE A TRASH CAN, SO THAT WHEN I BLOW MY BRAINS OUT IT WON'T MAKE A MESS!!! help me...

Maybe you could elaborate a bit on what you have tried. Have you even gotten a window open? Are you using a library that abstracts windowing like GLUT, SDL or GLFW? Are you getting compiler errors or is nothing happening? It's quite impossible to help if you don't give enough information.

Yikes. Well.... okay. Here you go.

Alternatively, perhaps you could describe the actual problems you've been having, so that we can help you get it working.

that may not have been a helpful post but it was one of the funniest post's I've seen in a long time:)

As for the original post, what is the exact problem?? I'd like to help but I don't know what advice to offer until you give me a compile error or link error.

Cheers

Although I wouldn't recommend this one.

Sorry about the long reply, i'm calm now... i think....

I've been trying to use Borland Delphi 2005 to create a 3D game. Problem is, I don't know where to get the openGL library, and openGL is the only thing that seems to be "accepted". Then again - i'm new to this aspect of programming - so i may not have all my facts straight. What i want to do is get a "dpk" file, or anything that i can install so that when I'm using the visual aspect of a VCL form, i can actually SEE what i'm doing.

PLEASE help me - i realize that i'm a bit of a newbie so i anyone can refer me to a place to start, that'd be great too

:)

NeHe's page has a lot about getting started with OpenGL (see "OpenGL Tutorials" there on the left).

While all of the tutorial code is written in C, many of them have been ported to other languages, including Delphi.

Okay, so do i download the "DOT"?

If so, I just did so, along with many other files.

BUT! I also need some help with ALOT of other stuff :

-Will I need to buy alot?
-Where do i go to get something that will work with Physics?
-Am I supposed to make my own Game engine, or use another?
-Or if I just wanted to make my own engine - where do I start?
-What places can I go to get "copyright free" images, textures, models, etc.?
-I have 3D Canvas. The free version only imports/exports a few formats, which ones can i use?
-How do I make "Joints" - such as a leg or an arm moving?
-The game I am looking to create will use a system for "Customizing" certain objects; the only example i can think of off the top of my head is in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series: at the start of the game, when you select colors, clothing, and body types to create a character; How do i do this?
-Are there any sites that make demos for delphi? I know NeHe makes them in C, so do they have it for delphi as well?
-Am I allowed to base aspects of my game directly from open-source demos, or do i have to do the coding equivalent of "paraphrasing"?
-Are there any sites that are made for beginners like me?
-Any tips, tricks, shortcuts, etc.?

Okay, i know there's a boatload to be learned here, and i know this thread is probably annoying people just a little bit, so if anyone would rather email me the info, I'm at: ClassicMatches@yahoo.com

Use different textures for different shirts. I believe to create pants/shorts, you simply would model the legs and model pants over it. Then to make shorts you simply make the texture for the bottom part transparent.

Whichever you want to do.

NeHe as stated or GameTutorials.com

Google is your friend. Don't start with huge ambitions if you have just started. Make Pong or Tetris or Breakout or something simple first.

I guess you'll have to prepare yourself for some months / years learning the basic 3d programming.

-I have 3D Canvas.

The demo? answer: switch to blender.

If you haven't got a basic triangle on your screen, type in the code in a new delphi project on the following page: http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,26401,00.html

and you'll need gl.pas and glu.pas in your directory. It can't fail, it's the most basic stuff.
Good luck!

Thank you guys, every little bit of info helps.

I have to admit, i've heard you're "Supposed" to do simple things like Tetris, first - so i'll try that. I guess for a while i can just play around with the stuff I've come across so far.

Again, I thank everyone who helped me (especially sneftel, the humor calmed me down), but i'll keep referring back to this post if any new info comes through.

:)
