I was wondering, since I’m not really a fan of the clean shaven look, whether anyone knows of a method to maintain facial hair at perhaps half a centre meter all around. I’ve tried just using a small pair of scissors but that didn’t really work. Do I need to buy an electric shaver on which you can use a plastic guard (like a hairdresser might use on your sideburns), or is there another (cheaper) way to go about this? I’ve asked a few people but everyone seems to favour the clean, close shave appearance. Thanks, Jackson Allan

If you want to maintain a certain length, you might need to buy an adjustable electric razor. I also don't like the clean shave too much (makes me look way too young), but I don't like really long facial hair (too itchy), so I usually get the look I want a few days after a clean shave, when the hair just starts to grow back.

Also, you could try using the manual razor to get the length you want. Instead of pushing all the way down, just kind of "graze" it across the hair until it slowly trims it down to the desired length. I've done this a few times on a goatee and it does the job.

My skin doesn't like a clean shave so I use a hair clipper like this one link>

I use this without the plastic guard thingy, it just doesn't work on the face because the end result will be very different length on the chin and cheeks. However if I shave without the plastic thing it takes only a few days until it would grow to half a centimetre. The plastic thing I use only for the head.

ha.. you could be like me and have that look only a day after shaving.. bloody french ancestry. I don't enjoy having to shave every single day, really.

I use this to help maintain a beard and sometimes keep that "permanent 5 o'clock shadow" style going. I'd recommend it, and it's only 20 bucks or so.

A set of cheap clippers can be had for like $20, which one you think about it, is really cheapper than a few months of rzors.

He can get the item that I linked to above for 20$.

Of course, I still shave on occasion too. I recommend the Mach 3 Turbo for that. ;) Best damn shave i've ever had, and cheaper than other acceptable alternatives. ;)

After reading this thread, I have just purchased the Norelco G270 from Amazon. It's 16$, cheaper than the above link. Plus it has more features and better reviews. I hope it works.

I did see that, and almost mentioned it, but I do not own that one so I cannot vouch for it. In general, I have found Norelco to offer a good product (even the cheaper items), so good luck with it!

yeah i have that and it works pretty well for me as well. a ten hour charge will last you a couple of weeks, especially if you trim like every other day. it has like ten lengths as well, but you will probably be wishing soon they had one or two at the lower end...like a setting between settings 1 and 2.

ooh, that ones nice as well...same lengths as the t765, plus a nose hair trimmer! (and it looks way nicer...but lets be honest, for sub $20 they both are going to feel kind of cheap).

I've noticed too that when I do run out of charge, if I plug it in with the charger, I can still use it while it is charging.

Yeah, I think some more lower settings would be nice, but I don't know how common that is on these types of clippers. I can get a decent length out of it, though, coupled with a different trimmer that came in a pack with it.

I don't know if he can find it, but what I got came with the t765, this: clicky and a Norelco nose hair trimmer. (3 pieces). I'm sure it would be cheaper nowadays, considering this was a few years ago.

The nosehair trimmer that came with it was just ok though. I'm not sure if other nosehair trimmers are any better, however, since this is my first one.

I can vouch for it, sort of. Earlier this year I decided to grow a beard. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a trimmer because I didn't know how long I'd keep it. Turns out, I like the beard and the trimmer. Thing is, I use it on 5: close enough for a clean look on my face, long enough that it doesn't look too sparse with my hair. This leaves about a centimeter of hair.

I don't know why more men don't grow a beard. Maybe it's the mixed reaction from women? (Some hate it, some love it) Or maybe it's because everyone says I look like Jesus (I also have long hair). In any case, to quote The Dread Pirate Roberts: It's just that they're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future. (Although he was talking about masks.)

i think the main reason that most people dont grow beards is because they dont know how to properly maintain one. plus after about a month, they get really itchy

I usually use just a beard trimmer with no guard on it to give me about a 2mm lenght. I've found this to actually be smoother. If I shave after a few hours it feels like 220grit sandpaper on my face, which isn't fun.

If you don't like a trimmer with a guard (which makes maintenance simple) barbers will trim your beard. I'd say mine stopped itching after about a month (and it wasn't really "itching" for me, it was more like "I can feel the hairs moving").

I was planning on making a new topic for my next question, but I might as well ask here. Hopefully, someone can help me. I own a very good hair clipper set. I cut my own hair every weekend. Is it possible to use any oil (3M in particular) for my clipper or do I HAVE to use special hair clipper oil. It seems that oil is oil, that it would work fine. I'm just wondering, because I want to cut my hair today, but I haven't oiled it in a while. Any help appreciated.

Well, technically you can't use "any" oil (your car, your salad, and your clipper all probably use different oils), but if it's the same oil it's the same oil. You clipper can't read the label.

Any light mineral oil should do just fine.
