Penetration?

Original Post
I was searching google for some statistics and only managed to come across some old statistics, and statistics arent even correct alot of the time so that leads me to post here. What is the market penetration for the .NET framework? for both ver. 1.1 and 2.0? since I would assume 2.0 would have a lower market penetration than 1.1. I'm beginning to get a team together to work on commercial/shareware games, and these games would mostly target casual gamers, so thats another headache since casual games usually arent upto fullspeed with everyone else. Is it really practical to use .NET at this point in time for commercial GAMES? It seems like an added 20MB download would really hurt if your game was say around 10-30MB's. Is it viable, since i'm almost positive you're bound to lose some sales when people realize the download size, and that would probably also manage to turn away people from downloading a demo. So, is it viable to develop games in .NET at this point? Since i'll be using OGRE. I'd rather use .NET , but if its too big of a cost then i'd just use C++.
I don't see why not. A lot of people already have it and those who don't will wind up needing it for other applications in the near future. Anyone who purchased Windows Vista I'm sure will find it as part of the suite of softwares coming with the OS.
That being said, your thread title is brilliant.

Quote:Those that buy indie games probably already have any and all such libraries. If you happen to use one they don't have, they're likely to download it. A 20MB download doesn't take long with any reasonable internet connection.

I'd suggest you provide the .NET framework as a seperate download. You wouldn't package the DirectX 9 runtime with a small game, so I don't see why you should package the .NET framework with one either. Just provide clear links on the download page, and add checks during the installation to ensure the user has the .NET framework installed. Depending on your installation package, you might even be able to enable the setup program itself to download and install the .NET framework if it is not installed, so the user is not inconvenienced.
As for market penetration, keep in mind that anyone who has automatic updates turned on should have the .NET framework installed and up to date.

I agree, it's very misleading. I expected something else.
Yeah, same here.., i was expecting something like the penetration of the xbox360 on the japanese market :):P
I was thinking more along the lines of Wii penetration [grin]
