Is awesome. If you're into Tool and you haven't gotten it yet .. BUY IT! It's called "10,000 Days". This album really reminds me of "Lateralus," which was my favorite Tool album before.

I just bought it about an hour ago. It's really good. Seems to be more emphasis on the guitar/bass than lateralus.

Does anyone else find themselves trying to sing another, older Tool song when one of the new ones come on the radio?

This happens to me all the time.

Same thing with Nickelback. I swear it's a song I already know, but yet, it's not!

I have a 40 minute drive to (and from) work every day, so I need something to keep me occupied. I could either burn a new CD every day (which I did for the first few months until it got very tedious) or listen to the radio.

I ain't paying for satellite radio because it's a retarded bait and switch tactic (all stations will play commercials in 2-3 years, despite the fact that the primary selling point is "NO COMMERCIALS!"; don't believe me? Look at cable TV).

And finally, I try not to listen to Nickelback, but unfortunately, sometimes it's the best thing on. We've got 5 christian stations, 3 country, 2 classic rock, 3 pop, 2 modern rock, 1 classical, 1 Jack (no idea how to classify them), 1 oldies, 1 rap, and NPR, so it's not like I have a lot of choice.

The christian channels are annoying, all they ever do is say I'm going to hell for not believing in some dude who died 2000 years ago. The country channels are equally annoying, since they never play any real country music, just that new redneck white trash shit (Johnny Cash = real country, Toby Keith = redneck white trash), the classic rock stations are obsessed with The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd (almost never play any of the good classic Rock, like The Beatles, Springsteen, Mellancamp, etc), the pop stations are about 80% fluff, the modern rock stations are for the most part listenable, but the emo bands are too much to handle sometimes, the classical station is good when they're playing Baroque, but I don't really like anything outside of Baroque, Jack plays about 50% awesome and 50% crap, the oldies plays about 40% awesome and 60% blah, I can't stand Rap, and NPR is always doing weird stories that I could care less about (oh look, a 1-hour program about a college for deaf people... on a radio... how very... ironic.).

So there you have it. Most of the time I'll flip past Nickelback about 3 times before I finally give in and listen to it. The only song I refuse to listen to is that damned photograph song. Ugh.

..I'd say grab an iPod/mp3player and hook it up to your car and be done with it.. but you'll probably give me some reason why it's a terrible idea. But seriously, I have about 30 CDs in my car at any time, providing more than enough music for extended periods of time. Beyond that, I really don't see why your only reason for ignoring satellite radio is the slim chance of hearing a commercial. It doesn't change the fact that you have a much more diverse rotation of new music.

Take a step back and read what you wrote. It sounds like you have a lot of choice - 20 different stations, 9 different genres. What is more likely is that the programmers for those various stations don't have much choice in what they play - leading to a safe flat uninspiring soundscape - just another electronic commercial pumping station. Fill'er up!

I forgot to mention that I'm also broke and a very cheap bastard on top of that.

Yeah; I'm still luckier than a lot of cities though; we've had no Clear Channel takeover yet, so luckily our stations are still mostly owned by different people, and therefore don't synchronize commercials.

Yeah, I can vouch for loving Sirius. I am a big fan of Stern, which helps, though. The music stations are awesome, I can always find at least SOMETHING I like on. Additionally, the receiver I have is kind of like a tivo.. you can rewind what you've been listening to, pause, and it also pops up with your favorite artists/songs any time they start playing on any of the channels. All you do is push the button and it switches channels over to it.

Granted, it's not CHEAP, but its far from expensive. It's something like 130$ per year, which is hardly what I would call expensive.. but everyone is welcome to do what they like.

I just like to let people know that it is *REALLY* good. Who knows where we will be in 5 years, but as of now, I would never switch back to regular radio. If they upped it to 20$/month, I would still subscribe, it is THAT good.

Pitchfork's review of the new album.

Quote:
Like most progressive rock and heavy metal-- hell, maybe most popular music in general-- suspension of disbelief is key with Tool. Taken at face value, with their song suites, meat puppet videos, and histrionic singer, they're pretty goofy. People make fun of Tool fans because they assume they take the band seriously-- these spotty, greasy kids with bad shoes and worse hair who already wear an insult on their T-shirts. At 28, I'd feel funny mocking 15-year-olds still finding their place in the world. And as for taking them seriously-- well, I take Tool about as seriously as I do black metal or Lil Jon or the films of Tsui Hark. Which is to say, not very.

A Pitchfork-friendly analogy: Tool are the Radiohead of nü-metal. Both bands predate scenes they later became avatars for; both were more creative and inspirational than their followers; both were incredibly pretentious; and both still managed to sell an ass-load of records. Tool didn't release an album between 1996 and 2001. They missed nü-metal's entire rise and fall, an era of whiteboy dreads, bonsai facial hair, funk bass poppin', and constipated balladry. And much like Radiohead when they dropped the Kid A/Amnesiac doubleshot, Tool released Lateralus early in this decade to radio silence and huge numbers.

Sounds about right.

Nu metal? I would never in a million years compare Tool's sound to Korn's.

Tool ... compared to nu-metal?! Blasphemy! All credibility of that review was lost by the second paragraph :)

This CD definitely has more mellow spots in it than Lateralus. The fact that Danny Carey isn't constantly pounding a furious double bass beat might turn some people off. He still shines on this album, though .. albeit in a different way. Sometimes paying attention to the dynamics and touch of your instrument can bring the music to a different level, but some people see this as losing your "brutalness", heh.

This is the review I read before deciding to buy the album: Review

Toby Keith = redneck white trash

Correction: redneck white trash with money [grin]

(Yes, I like Toby Keith. Yes, I like Johnny Cash.)

Because I can listen to commercials for free on regular radio?

My car radio has stations for: Pop country, "Real" country (No bluegrass, but other than that Mithrandir might approve), Hard rock, 3x Classical rock. They don't do a very good job of synchronizing commercials so I don't really listen to them and it's free.

Theres a difference between Keith and Cash, Cash had talent. I hate new country and "tear in your beer" country but the really old stuff and like Cash and Hank Sr. is good.

The thing about radio is even the classic rock stations only play the hits. I imagine Steppenwulf put out at least one other song then "Magic Carpet Ride" but you would never tell that from the radio. Granted I've only messed with a XM radio for a couple of minutes. But after I'm done with school I think it would be worth it to pay a few bucks a month to hear some different stuff. Even if they do start having commericals theres another 100 channels to pick from. There are three classic rock stations at home and there are sometimes two of them will have the exact playlist on each, just like one is 10-15 seconds ahead of the other.

Oh yeah, Radiohead is about as nu metal as Brittney Spears is.

Lets be fair, Pitchfork are the elitist poseurs of the music world. Their Tool review is probably the first readable review I've seen on the site in a while. Most of the time their reviews read like the homework of an art school's remedial creative writing class.

Around here, our classic rock stations are always having Pink Floyd marathons and The Rolling Stones marathons, where they play nothing but PF and TRS for an entire weekend. Really annoying. It's been over 3 months since I heard a single Beatles song on them.

And damnit, now you've got that song stuck in my head.

Sigh.
