Hi, guys. Let's say I have a 12x12 isometric map ( 32x32 tile size ) and I have a clump of tree objects in the middle of the map that are about three times the height of the player's character. How would you deal with those objects? Would you ( a ) prevent the player's character from moving behind those objects, ( b ) allow the player the move behind the objects and make the objects semi-transparent, ( c ) allow the player to move behind the objects and obscure the view of the player's character, or ( d ) do something else? I have thought about allowing the player to rotate the map ( in 90 degree steps ) but I'm a bit concerned doing that would become confusing for the player. There is also the option of not having any objects at all in the middle of the map and just restrict them to the far top-left and top-right of the map, but that becomes a bit restrictive and boring after a while. Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions would be great because I'm at a lose about the best way to approach this. Thanks. PS: Just in case it makes any difference, the engine is Flash 8 based. in most cases, solution A is simply unacceptable
solution B is definatly the most traditional and easy
solution C would be cool but hard to impliment
--if you choose option C you need to impliment solution B then let the user control the rotation

Personally I like option B best. The thing to keep in mind is that only the PC (Player Character) should cause this effect to happen. NPC's and Enemy MOB's should not cause this effect and should be obscured by the objects they have "Hidden" behind.

So if your game is multi-player keep this in mind when setting up rendering, as other players would be treaded appropriately accoding to designation.

I've been making a iso game for the past 3,5 months as well and although not easy, option c is definitely the way to go.
