OK, is there any way I can hear what is going into the microphone jack through my speakers the same time I am recording? e.g. I'm trying to record some guitar, but it is hard to play when I can't hear what I'm playing. Is this something to do with hardware :(? Or is there something I can do? Thanks for any help, this has really been bugging me!

Well, check your sound settings (under the control panel). Make sure nothing is muted, and that the volumes are all at a reasonable level.

If the guitar is plugged directly into the computer mic jack, that could explain the quietness - you could try using the output on your amp to plug into the computer. Or, just artificially boost the sound with your computer. The amp is a better sounding solution.

Yes there is.

Most mixer boards have a headphone jack. If you are doing any serious recording for your music, you really need a mixer. And one or two high quality cardioid mics. As a bonus mixer boards generally have preamps and postamp (= aka master volume) controls. Nicer mixer boards have other features, but you pay for them.

If you are just plugging in to a PC sound card (eww!) then you can un-mute the mic or line-in channel and it will send the sound to the output jack, in addition to routing the sound to the software.

I'm not really doing anything too serious, but I am going though my amp's recording out jack. I am going to check if anything is muted ...

Ahh yes stupid me, the output for microphone was muted.
