Hey guys I was wondering if any of you have any inside industry knowledge as to why no violent 3d 1 on 1 fighting games like mk are being made. (even though mk is fantasy violence and I really dislike what that game has become over the years) To me it isn't the genre thats dead as I've always felt a genre is always dormant and that good games only awaken it. Some fighting games produced in the past and recently have not been that good especially some american 3d fighters (mechanically and presentation wise) and I can say the same for some japanese games ( mostly presentation as usually these guys are spot on with good mechanics). KI was ok though (I preferred the 2nd one presentation wise) and Mace looked pretty cool but I don't know about the fighting engine. Plus, I know tons of people who still play fighters, and I feel if good new games were to come out it would awaken the genre once again, amongst a larger crowd. I probably have more to say but its late and I probably typed stuff wrong and sound incoherent so I'll correct myself later haha.

I - Not Enough Toast

There is not enough toast available for game developers. With great toast comes great responsibility. One day, the world will see you, without your toasty mask!

II - Not Enough Peanut Butter

Without peanut butter, there can be no peanut butter and jelly. Important components of today's fast-paced button-mashers.

III - Was Hungry, But Had To Eat Pepperoni Instead of Peanut Butter Toast

So what if I'm bitter? Nobody seems to have what I want. No toast, no jelly. No violent fighters. But most of all, no toast, no peanut butter, no jelly. I'd go to the store, but it's past midnight. Pepperoni was the only thing left.

IV - If this game were Final Fantasy VI, it would be IIII

Final Fantasy 7 is a horrible game. It would have been better if it was more like Smash Brothers, and you could have Tifa and Barret duke it out. They could call it FINAL FANTASY - INTERRACIAL.

thankyou for being so informative skj

Rob, I am aware of mk armageddon. I dont think I'll be getting this though as deception really blew.

What I was asking is why the insdustry isn't making good (more or less realistic) violent 3d fighters or just violent fighters in general that are like mk but that are not mk. Where's the brand new stuff? All I see is rehashes everywhere and not just for fighters.

Do any industry people actually read these posts?

I guess I'll have to take matters into my own hands as I've been planning for a long time now.

Industry people do read these posts; whether or not an industry person is going to see your post and say "HALT THE PRESSES! We must begin work on a violent fighting game because EagleClaw says the market is undersaturated," is another matter entirely. [wink]

IMO "Violent fighting game" almost by definition is a rehash. What do you want? Cooler fatalities? More realistic looking blood that clots as it flies through the air? If it's interesting and original mechanics you're interested in, I don't think you're going to find them near MK.
It only takes one mistake to wake up dead the next morning.

Every genre is being ground up and turned in to a ground beef sandwich .. with a little mustard .. MMmmm. Anyway, if you grew up with the older games you'll naturally notice that every other game of that genre is being spit out in to a rehash, and it won't change. Fighting games sadly in my opinion have gone the way of the dodo, with the transition between 2D and 3D they have lost a lot of what made fighters fun. As a kid it wasn't about kicking and punching as much as it was super massive combos, I was brought up with more arcade fighters so winning wasn't an issue as much as how badly you won.

One of the reasons why I don't play any shooters is because they're the same concept wrapped in coated candy, and I don't see that changing as long as there is kids who buy these games.

Every good 2D fighter player knows the button mashers always lose.

"HALT THE PRESSES" haha :}

Frequency,I thought it interesting indusrty folk do not read gamedev forums (was that what you were saying?) because it might give them an insight as to what games people would like to see being made.

I am a fan of blood and gore so yes I would actually like fatalities that ARE original and not the same stuff being reused like in mk. It's ok though I'm planning to make my own violent fighter that tries to get as close as real as possible without sacrificing gameplay. So no shooting out buckets of blood when you get punched like in mk.

Yeah 3d mk mechanics constantly get bashed by people who understand fighting engines.

Pumpkin, I didn't understand what you meant when you said this

"I was brought up with more arcade fighters so winning wasn't an issue as much as how badly you won"

On a side note I think Virtua Fighterm rocks and am excited to play the 5th one even though from gameplay vids I thought the graphics could have looked so much better.

With games like Marvel vs Capcom (or any other) you would have the button mashers pressing any button that seemed alright, then you had the more experienced players which knew all the combo's a select few characters had and vaguely a few they didn't use. Then you had any other group that would use all these and not just go for a win, but go for massive combo's to destroy the opponent.

To me it isn't the genre thats dead as I've always felt a genre is always dormant and that good games only awaken it.

Generally, genres go dormant and stay there. Take adventure games: Once the mainstay of the industry, now marginalized. They're still making adventure games; they're just not making very many, and not marketing them aggressively. Same deal with 2D platformers; they're still making them, but they don't have the primacy they once did. In the case of platformers, the genre was reborn as the 3D platformer. Fighting games are just another example of a permanently dormant genre. (And they've already had their 3D renaissance, which likewise has come and gone).

Would the genre be resuscitated if the industry decided to dump a bunch of new fighting games into stores? Maybe. They'd have to overcome the so-five-years-ago stigma, not an easy thing to do (unless you're Nintendo). But why would they want to? There are other genres which are more of a sure thing.

a genre like a fighting game isn't dead, it's just extrmeely hard to make a good one. It takes great genius it takes to make a geniusally good and deep fighting game that cna be played at high level.

First it takes one to completely understnad other fightin games. One who creates a great fighting game cannot be a kn3wb in it. Even if they are the greatest they must understand concepts of character balance and what makes the game good.

That is a feet that very little of the populatoin can muster for their are only few top players in each game.

Then besides being good they must undrestand how to create such things.

It takes a special type of skill, knowledge, and creativity for such a feet. Furthermore besides having hte skill you musth ave the financial backing.

A fighting gmae is just too ahrd ot make.

Sneftel what did you mean about the Nintendo comment?

You see guys it has been my dream ever since I saw mk back in the arcades to make a fighter of my own that could get as realistiic as possible without sacrificing gameplay and that is gory. I do feel people crave that blood and gore from games(like mk which is still big, even if it be for the blood and storyline only) and if I make this game this would be the first time that a fighting game is realistically violent and has a good fighting engine like virtua fighter. Meaning no hadouken fireballs yet I will still find a way to make this game fun like maybe use various projectile weapons like kunai and shuriken for certain players as special moves.

I'm willing to stick through with this project, as I dont care how long it takes to make and how hard it gets.

I have to take this chance. After all thats what dreamers do.

I'm truly dedicated.

I have no idea what you are trying to say.
