Ok..so we're nearing the end of our flight, and my right side of my forhead starts feeling like there's a baloon behind getting ready to explode and as we continue our descent, the pain spreads down to behind my right eye and this pain's intensity remains even after the plane makes touchdown, etc. this also hapened on the previous flight except the pain was in the ear and the side of the face contigious to the ear (left side). So..i've read and heard about DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and was kinda worried about that but it surely can't be that!! any idea about what it was?

Call a medic and ask those...?

I'd second the ask a doctor/medic advice, however I would guess it's just blocked sinuses have you had a cold recently?

actually yes, but do sinus infections cause excruiciating pain? i thought an infection just caused stuffiness and uncomfortability.

oh, and i definitely couldn't swallow without a little discomfort a couple hours into the flight(s). sounds like swollen lymph nodes? (totally disconnected with the whole pressure-pain thing)

I flew with a cold once, the plane descending for landing was a very unpleasant experience.

Though, talking to a doctor about it wouldn't be a bad idea.

don't know of too many doctors in a country half way across the world from my home. :(

You should really find one.

It is most likely that you're just having some sinus problems and there is some pressure built up in your sinuses and so the pressure diff when the plane goes up and down is causing you pain.

I doubt it's DVT, but then again, I don't know what DVT feels like.

So, in conclusion: find a doctor. If you work, ask your workmates for a doctor near your work. If not, ask the people you live with, and/or your neighbours and friends.

i'd be willing to bet the pain has to do with the pressure caused by the rapid descent of the plane. The area around my nose usually hurts like crazy during those times. Sometimes i suck on an ice cube or chew gum to help relieve the pain.

Although Im no doctor, I believe DVT begins in the legs. In theory it can occur anywhere, but its caused by not moving your legs for long periods of time when on a flight. I dont think it can occur in the head.

I do however know you are not supposed to fly if you have sinus problems, so this is the most likely explanation.

However, I would strongly recommend you see a doctor rather than ask on GD for advice!

I've been diagnosing people a lot lately, first I successfully identified a case of dysentry and then a case of an ingrown toe nail. My officies are open from 1am to 5 am, feel free to drop by anytime during those hours.

Did I mention that all checkups are free?

hold your nose and mouth closed and blow out... steady, firm presure, but dont blow out your eardrums from the inside. follow it up with a good yawn.

Equalize the preasure between your inner ear and your nasal cavity.

Last time I had a sinus infection, the pain around my mandible and ears was pretty bad at times, especially when I had to open my mouth wider than usual

Really nothing to worry about. As everyone else has said its just the pressure equalizing from the decent.

If you had a sinus infection then the pressure is worse and pain can sometimes last for up to a week after a landing. If it isn't bothering you right now then it's not going to bother you again until you fly again. When you fly again chew gum or drink something on the decent, anything that makes you swallow. If you're in a smaller plane ask them to make the decent about half as fast as normal, then it shouldn't really bother you at all (I wouldn't suggest asking that on a commercial liner).

Once I went on a plane, I was about half way in the flight and I had the worst pain ever, it felt really really bad, it was in my lower stomach and it just felt like it was getting more and more swolen on the inside and it just hurt so much like internal bruising.

I went to the toilet and did a p, then I felt better!

story over!

anyway, in the morning, if you are still feeling bad, go to doctor, if not, maybe it was a unlucky one off thing and it is ok!

Mamky, but a carbide-tipped 1/32" drill bit (available at any hardware store) should make short work of any pressure caused by a sinus infection. Aim carefully.
