hello I was wondering if you guys could tell me of any good game schools near or in San Antonio, or at the very least schools nearest to it. I'm an artist so I most likely will be doing stuff like creating characters, backgrouds, and other effects as well as being the games lead designer. My question is if I want to do this do I really need to attend a school or can I just graphics software out there I can learn by myself (isnt this what they teach you in schools?) as well as making a demo so I can show some game compabnies my work? I still need training in drawing by hand, so would taking art lessons be necessary for me to get a job? thanks

Don't quote me on this, but school doesn't really matter as far as getting a job goes, because they'll base their decision on how good your portfolio is.

It is possible to learn everything on your own, or by reading books and talking to other artist on the Internet. That can be difficult, though, and there's a good chance you'll not find out about some important things.

I'd recommend going to school. I've learned things I wouldn't have otherwise, gotten to take classes about non-art things, plus I got to interact with people who had other goals than working on computer games. It's good to learn about art beyond concept design.

There are different sorts of schools to choose from. One is a university or art institute. Then you can also see what they teach: illustration or fine art. The latter could be more classical or contemporary in approach. You should look at the websites for different places, and look at the faculty or student art work.
