cd ripping software

I have several cd's that I would like to rip to my hard drive. These cd's are scratched up a bit, but I would just like to rip the audio as effectively as possible. Windows media player hangs up when I try to perform this process. Does anyone recommend any other ripping software that might be able to grab this music? Something free please. Thanks!

CDEx does a good job ripping CD's. (Search on sourceforge) I guess it'll be able to rip them, but you will most likely be able to hear the screatches no matter what program you use.
