Okay, I finally have a job and I’m getting paid tomorrow. So I have money to start saving, cause bills got taken out already. I want to get a new computer! First off, I want to switch to ATI because I’ve been hearing a lot of bad things about NVIDIA lately. Plus, I’d rather have a card from the manufacture them selves’, not some Joe-blow in his workshop working with NVIDIA stuff. Let’s see, I have a 40GB HD that I can reuse for now. Also, my floppy and CDROM are good. Eventually, I will replace the CDROM and HD, but not now (too expensive). So I will need a new motherboard, CPU, graphics & sound and probably new memory, unless I can keep the sticks I got. Let’s start with the motherboard first, I need it to support PCI Express 2x16 for the Radeon X1900 I wanna get. Plus I need it to support a P4 because I want to switch to intel also (No more AMD! :D). I know I have older DDR, but I’m not exactly sure what type, I think it’s like DDR2 something, I’d have to check. I would like the motherboard to support the new ATA for HDs too. I’ve heard its faster then old IDE. I’m not much into intergraded things at all. My current mother board has intergraded. I Google and Google but I can’t come up with any matches. What is a good motherboard to get? Like, quality brand with good warranties and what not.
I'm curious what bad things you've heard about NVIDIA recently?
I've never had any problems with nVidia cards, their driver support was always top-notch in my opinion. I don't know if ATI has improved since the last problem I bought of theirs.
So far my record is: 1x ATI 9800 Pro with stock heat sink overheated past warranty and permanently damaged itself, 1x ATI 9800 XT with an after-market Zalman heatsink that's still running, and 3 nVidia cards with stock heat sinks and one with a Zalman that still work.
Of my friends, one of them has had an nVidia 6800 (unknown specific model) overheat with stock fan.
So I'd say it's pretty much whatever you want to go with, but get an aftermarket heat sink just to be sure. Safer spending $35 on a heat sink than $350 on a new video card.
I would wait for DX10 video cards if I were you.
