I was up until 3am in the morning today talking to an old buddy (?) of mine. Which I guess had recently "seen the light" after going through college. Originally he had been pretty open minded about what he used, but it almost seemed now he was one of the types who get in to government conspiracies. An example of this is how he argued that I wasted money on a power supply, when I could have bought a cheap one for $50. Of course the idea of quality seems oblivious to him as he later then made comments referring benchmarks as paid popularity contests. (Yeah, he actually believes that the companies pay to get better benchmarks) All he was doing is bashing everything I had to say, and when I gave him hard facts or convincing points he would counter with indirectly calling me a pedophile (because in his mind, anyone who uses MS products, or the .NET interface is a pedo). I primarily use windows for the most part, but I wouldn't dare open my mouth and bash something I know very little about. I'm starting to wonder, is there any help for nut jobs like him? He seemed to think he was talking to a brick wall, treating me like I was a first time computer user. Knowing full well that I've been programming / using a pc longer then he has (much).

There are three things I don't discuss at the dinner table.

-Politics
-Religion
-Which operating system I use

Actually some companies are in cahoots when it comes to benchmarking. Certain benchmarks are created to take advantage of a certain manufacturer's chipset or design architecture and make it appear better than it's competitors. ATI and Nvidia both do it (although I would hardly call it a conspiracy theory nor would I throw out all benchmarks).

As for your question, when someone starts spouting conspiracy theories, forget trying to rationalize with them. What point is there talking to someone who would claim that evidence that is directly contrary to their opinion is manufactured or something similar. Don't waste your time. If your stuck in a conversation, go along with him for fun. In fact, if he has a crazy conspiracy, try to make it even more crazy. Makes for a fun way to pass the time.

Your buddy sounds like one of those people who have just installed Linux off the shelf, and are so excited about it that they have to promote it to everyone despite the fact that they don't actually use it for anything, and would have no idea how to do so anyway.

Once you actually do things with Linux, the rabid evangelism stops and you no longer give a shit about what other people use. It's the same thing with the Harley-Davidson message boards -- accountants have just gotten their new Harley and decide to post long hate-filled screeds on message boards about all other brands of motorcycle despite the fact they've been riding for a sum total of 10 hours.

Yeah, I don't know where I would be able to find my kiddie porn if it wasn't for the .NET framework.

God do I ever know! My girlfriend's brother is huge on conspiracy theory and there is NO way to debate with him (because of "constructed" information). It's really annoying and it got to the point where now I just smile and nod. Not to confuse, but we are really good friends otherwise.

So do like Church mentioned. Just ignore his rambling :)

Of course they do - it's called research and development. Nothing sinister about it.

When he said it, he was reffering to the manufacures of the product paying the people who are doing the benchmarks to fugde the results.
