Any lounge lizards here own a xbox 360 controller for use with their PC? I was thinking of picking one up, but I'm concerned about the support or lack thereof for it. AFAIK, from the DirectX docs, there's a new separate API (XInput) specifically for this controller (so far), so for this controller to work with a game it'll have to be something fairly recent? For those who own one, does it work with any of the following: - Mame - That nifty GridWars game floating around - Battlefield 2 - Any Ubisoft PC port - Anything else?

I own one but unfortunately I cannot comment on those selections. I've been using it almost exclusively for emulated games.

It is recognized like any other gamepad, so I can't imagine you would have too much trouble. Of course, I imagine very few games will make special use of XInput to use the rumble features or anything.

The XBox 360 controller works fine, although unless XInput is used, the triggers are mapped to one axis (and as noted, rumble will not be supported).

Perhaps try XBCD360 Guide. Using the custom drivers, it appears full support is possible without needing XInput (will work with existing games). I used similar drivers to enable support for the XBox 1 controller (with a custom USB-to-Xbox adaptor cable). Microsoft should recompile their driver with the commented out feature support enabled. It appears they removed features to force developers to use XInput: IMO this decision hurt consumers (which spawned the custom drivers).

While the XB360 controller is excellent, until MS enables the disabled features in their driver, perhaps pick up a Logitech Rumblepad 2: as good or better than the XBox 360 controller (has buttons in place of analog triggers, though), all features are supported, and it for retails $10 less.

A wireless version is also available (haven't tested it, though):

Neat, I didn't know it was recognized like a standard gamepad.

Oooh, nice link.

I considered this when I was searching around but I may need the xbox 360 controller's analog triggers for some particular games. I'm not sure if that's worth $20 more (found a place for $30) but I plan on keeping it around for a very long time.

Thanks for the info! [smile]
