I'm new to game development and I was wondering how you actually put sfx into your games. I know that you would need some type of software, but I don't know what type of software to look for. Can you point me in the right direction of what type of software I should get?

If you're talking about actually making the game play sound effects, you'll want to check out FMod. If you're wanting to know how to edit your own sound effects, I usually use GoldWave. Of course, to get really high quality sound effects you'll often want to look into effect libraries instead (discs of sound effects that you can use). You can sometimes find them really cheap (like $10 cheap) in the bargain shelves at Staples/Office Depot, if not they range in all different prices (cheap to tens of thousands of dollars!).
