I heard about this nice little bundle and went out and bought it contains all the games between Tiberium Dawn and Generals as well as their expantion packs. A must buy for the C&C fan seeing that this collection only cost me $55 after taxes. Now besides the fact that EA has hacked and slashed this together without fixing things up when released, there are some problems users are having. (It's fine for me) The only down side is that they still haven't come out with a patch for Tiberium Dawn, and Red Alert 1 for online play so thrid party patches are needed to connect to other servers. Anyone bought this that wants to get a game of RA 1/2 going?

eh, C&C was fun at the time, but strategy games have significantly advanced since then. Just can't seem to get into them.

they've advanced? I thought they just threw makeup and stuff on the crap pile and tried to sell it as gold. :P

I don't see it as piling new things up but it definatly seems that way, I was dissapointed when I found out that Westwood no longer exists and EA of all companies has taken over the series. I was horribly displeased with Generals as current stereotypical warefare really ruined the whole premice of the series. Also it took a new direction in C&C games where the commander (you) aren't debriefed in a video all of the time (from what I remember), and usually see news reports. The bar was the big issue, even though it was labeled a C&C game most of the lost feel came from a horizontal building bar as opposed to a classic vertical almost as if they wanted this to be more of a modern starcraft as opposed to a C&C game.

I just don't see how much more advanced gameplay can get if all they do is update the graphics add and remove a few extra units and re-release it. I guess when you have a genre to build on there isn't much room for change. Sounds an awful like first person shooters.

I think the biggest lack of advancement in those games are the controls, and unit AI.

Lets see where you build an infantry unit, out pops a section/squad, or maybe a platoon. (squad being like 8-15 men, platoon being 30-40 or so) Have a chain of command interface, you at the top, then a list of companies, which you can use to quickly select platoons, then a squad. Send a squad out to scout, or order a company to advance up the hill, defend their area, form a line which you can quickly setup with just a few mouse clicks and a keystroke or two. The AI would then deal with deploying the men in a half way intelligent mannor.

Rather than just have as little more than who has the largest number of most powerful units in range wins, the person that has their men depolyed best wins. Having your riflemen stand there firing their small gun at a tank while the tank then just runs over them really kinda sucks. Tanks are deadly to tanks, and very deadly to dumb infantry, but the biggest threat to tanks is really infanty. Tankers are in a can, they can't see much, and that guy sprinting up one of the many blindspots with the explosive charge is hard to hit. Can't hit what you don't know is there after all.

Example of how most of these games are lacking currently: 2 players X and Y.

X has 10 riflemen, 1 machinegunner, 2 howitzers, and 2 anti-tank infantry. Y has 50 riflemen and 4 tanks, and a few jeeps or something.

Y is going to win everytime right? He has way more men, just the riflemen are 5:1 so X should be royaly screwed every time no matter how things are layed out. However if Y is a fool, has his 50 riflemen walking in a nice collumn, tanks in front, jeeps bringing up the rear, and X has his soldiers in an ambush with the howitzers far in the rear, they can spot for the big guns, blow the snot out of Y's infantry collumn (which is also torn to shreads by the machine gunner) tanks die to a quick strike from the antitank infantry because they have no defences deployed to guard them from such an attack.

Well, X has just killed off all of Y's forces, and took no losses.

Your example about the tank and infantry breaks down to economics, most good war RTS games have two units; a genaric soldier with little to know explosives training, and an explosives expert. Not every soldier can be trained for explosives use, they're simply given a gun and shipped off, or at least in soviet russia. In that example as long as the tin can is shut an infantry has little or no chance against it, unless the unit was a grenader.

Anyway, anyone bother to purchuse this? I'm thinking of seeing how much online attention this has gotten by checking out RA2 online.
