Getting Bored With XP Themes
Advertisement
Original Post
Ok, so i'm now thoroughly bored with the Blue, Olive Green and Silver colour schemes. I don't want to download these desktop customisation programs because from what i have seen, unless you pay, they are constantly reminding you to purchase them. All i am really after is alternatives to the 3 colour schemes that Microsoft provide. Any ideas? Dave
Get Windows Vista.

yes, this is the one. I just hope you don't use the console a lot though. It uglifies it prety bad if you don't uncheck the option.
You could always download WindowBlinds and use one of the multitude of themes available. It isn't a desktop replacement, it just reskins everything.
Click here to see a theme i'm running There are so many other themes available at Customize.org and other sites.
The program doesn't take up much memory either so I think it's pretty nice.

You could download the UXTheme patcher and get normal windows themes. You don't need to have any other software after you run the patcher.

Get styleXP. It patches the uxtheme, and that is it. Nothing running in your memory, no services, nothing.
I use this theme. Here's a screenie for your consumption.

Looks awesome. Any idea on what the limitations are to the trial download? I downloaded this long ago and never reinstalled it - I can't remember why o_O

Wait.. there's a trial d/l? Is this for Vista users only?
No silly, it's XP. Just install the trial so it hacks the DLL file, set the theme, and never touch the software again. It can't revert it back on you - but theoretically, once it expires you probably can't go back and change the theme again. I'd recommend just throwing down some bills for it.

For bootscreen edits, styleXP told me it had to add a line to a boot kernel file or something like that and I said yes .. was that right.?
And what's up with the Windows Defender User GUI shutting down consistently when editing themes?
thanks but what am I supposed to do with the Bootscreen stuff? Even if I say 'Ok' to the rewriting of the boot.ini file (which I cannot even locate) on startup I must select between two boots (Windows Professional Edition vs. Windows Professional Edition [Bootscreen])
And why is the windows defender GUI thing making illegal moves and making itself shut down when changing theme/styles?

My advise it to not modify your boot screen. I did it with styleXP and it changes one of your system files. When I had a custom boot screen, Windows Update would not work for me because the modified system file apparently made my copy of XP look invalid.
To the OP: styleXP is a great tool for changing visual styles etc. I've used it for years and the only problem I've had with it has been, as mentioned above, when using it to customize my boot screen. Honestly, I can't remember if its free or not, but its definitely worth cheking out.
I believe after you opt to 'edit' the file, there's an option in stylexp to restore that file.
anyone know about this and how good it is? Aston Shell
