Silly Question?

I'm a bit of a newbie here, so forgive me if this is an obvious question; But why isn't there a specific forum section for Audio Programming problems? I've seen the "Music & Sound" section, but this seems to be more geared toward sound effects and music rather than the art of digitial signal processing & development. I think there is a need for it as potentially dsp is quite a big field and applicable towards game development, it would be nice if I could ask a question about directsound, or how to design real-time music systems or why my FFT doesn't work? Am I being really thick, I've looked several times and haven't seen a topic that seems appropriate to this subject.

No, we don't have a dedicated forum to the topic; while it is certainly a worthwhile field, there simply hasn't been enough discussion about it here in the past. We only create forums to reflect what our users are talking about, not to reflect divisions between fields or topics, so we've not created one.

Of course, you shouldn't let that stop you from posting topics if you want to. Questions about the DirectSound API are probably best suited to the DirectX forum; questions about sound from a physical modelling point of view most likely belong in the Math and Physics forum; questions about third-party sound libraries go in Alternative Game Libraries; and things like software mixing or DSP would probably go in Game Programming.

Thankyou for your reply - are you open to create a section in the future if there is enough demand?

Apart from the examples I give in my first post, I have some other very specific digital processing questions I wanted to ask, that just don't seem to fit anywhere else, I was hoping to find somewhere to open a dialog with other people in a simular position and get some more input & feedback for my project.

anyway, fair enough! Gamedev seems a nice place to hang around regardless and there are plenty more sections to keep me entertained besides ;)

Generally Gamedev.net has been happy to create new forums as they become necessary. However it really does depend upon volume of traffic. Despite being a big field generally speaking, DSP is really not all that big a field in game development. Most of the hard work is done in the driver or on the sound card itself, so few game developers need to worry about it. I probably see maybe 1 low-level sound manipulation post per month, at that. So, I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you! :)

As Kylotan says, we're very open to creating new forums if there's a sudden upsurge in discussion on a particular topic.

If you want to try and generate some discussion, you could always write an article on it [wink]
