Have you ever used a database engine for your games? If so, which database engine would you consider the best for MORPG games? I knew a good one: GIGABASE http://www.gigabase.org/gigabase.html, can work as stand alone, and is Object oriented. MySQL seem to be an standard.

The general consensus (based on a somewhat dated article from a 2003 GDC round-table on game object structure) seems to be that SQL databases are too slow for games. Apart from GigaBASE, ObjectStore was also mentioned in context with MMORPG's.

I find sqlite to be pretty quick; it just isn't really scalable.

Never read about GigaBase before, looks interesting for something I'm playing with.

Hmm, that's not what I heard from the Dark Ages of Camelot people, who said they were happy with MySQL. Obviously I think you'd want a caching layer over the top to help performance but there are so many benefits a relational database buys you.

Personally, I use SQLite for almost everything, and that's fine for my purposes. As for an MMORPG, I am generally of the opinion that if you have to ask what the best for an MMORPG is, then you're not equipped to make one...

I've never heard a better quote on that topic... this should be stickied!
