I've recently been doing a bit of freelance software development and I decided it would be a big help to set up an online portfolio of my computer based work. Besides learning HTML when I first got connected to the Internet, I've never done anything related to web development before so this project has been a big learning experience too. I'm very happy with my progress so far and I'm very interested in seeing what people think and things that I could maybe improve and whatnot. I have just about finished writing a custom content management system to give me an easy method of updating the website and also to help me with learning PHP and MySQL and becoming comfortable with using them. At the moment I only have the index/news page working, I need to write some more PHP code for the other pages and update my database with content for those pages. Right then, heres the URL/link: http://www.nickbloor.co.uk/ All feedback/comments/suggestions are welcome! Thanks! [Edit] Quick note, although I intend to, I haven't yet got around to cleaning up the HTML code and making sure it is W3C compliant. I will get around to that once I have the site up and running and the coding for all pages is completed. [/Edit]

Anyone? Did I make a bad choice of forum for this post or something?

Looks good. You might want to give it a little more variety in the color department to accent whats going on.

I agree with the other guys, it looks pretty darned good but is just a bit bland. A splash of color would do a lot of good. Something simple even... like have the menu items (buttons?) turn bright yellow or something when you mouseover, and have the one that represents the current page remain a bright red. Or something.

Looks good though overall.

i know its not your daily job to make sites

but you could add a css or text style to it or al least a bottom credit part

Nice, simple, easy to read. No annoying flash animations or stuff like that.

But, as said before, it's a little bland. Also, I don't like wixed-width websites. And the obvious more content.

Thanks a lot for the comments!

Colour - I like this idea although with the colours (read: greyscale!) that I'm using already I'll have to be careful that I don't end up making the website look tacky. I'm definitely going to work on the buttons though and at the least, have the button for the current page highlighted in some way in order to emphasize what page you're currently on.

Footer - I was planning to add a footer to the pages at one point but I completely forgot about the idea, I shall get around to adding that very soon!

Fixed-width - The two main reasons for my site being fixed width are (a) That is how I designed the website in Photoshop and (b) Variable width just seems too fiddly, when the window is too small or too large, the percentages get small/large and things get ugly. I'd like to make my site variable-width but I don't know a nice way to handle it, suggestions welcome!
