I'm trying to learn some terrain rendering algorithms and I bought and read the book "Focus on Terrain Programming." Everything was great until I got to the diamond backbone structure in the ROAM chapter. His explanation of the diamond backbone and then the next section on the split/merge priority queues were very very hard to follow and understand (very little explanations given in the book...think of someone giving you a very high level explanation in 3 small paragraphs with no code in the book to relate it to). So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good tutorial, book, website, whatever that explains this "diamond backbone" structure better, and the same for a better explanation of the split/merge priority queues using the "diamond backbone" structure. Or if someone is already an expert on this and wants to explain it to me, I'd take that too [grin] Thanks in advance!

This (pdf) is the primary work that I've read on ROAM. Admittedly, I haven't ever implemented ROAM, so I don't know if this source was lacking detail but I just didn't realize it, but it made a lot of sense to me. Although maybe that was the original ROAM algorithm. This site seems to have a lot of information too, on an improved version, and I remember reading stuff from here as well, back when I was learning about ROAM.

Thanks for the help...the first link was to the original whitepaper (which was included on the CD with the book) which I did read but it was still too high level for me, and I found the second link using google but there's basically only source code. I think the person that owns that website is the guy that helped the author of the terrain book, so almost everything on that website is just rewritten in the book. Thanks though...
