I am quite new to DirectX and am reading an older book Programming RPG with DirectX and just about to the chapter on DirectPlay. I have a fair amount of experience with programming server/clients with TCP/IP and wondering if DirectPlay is used often in game programming or ignored in favor of home-grown solutions?

Though i have no experience with network programming till now, but i searched through gamedev net to get basics and most people suggest to use WinSock or one of alternative network libraries.

DirectPlay has been deprecated and Microsoft recommend you use "other technologies" instead. Their intent is to move toward XNA when it's released, but until then, WinSock is about the only built-in option. If you have network programming experience, then you can stick with WinSock or look at one of the available free libraries. Check out the Multiplayer and Networking Forum FAQ for alternatives.
