ATI and AMD

I don't know if you guys already talked about this cause you guys are really fast with the news and all, but I saw this at slashdot which took me to the inquirer, http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33185, I don't know what this really means but in SlashDot it said something about a merge, do you guys really think AMD and ATI will merge? Either way, what are your ideas if they were to merge? I personally think that'd be cool and although I'm not really knowledgeable in these type of things, I'd be really excited to see what types of things would come up.

Reuters says they are close to a deal and they have quite a bit more integrity. I still don't understand why they want to merge. Unless ATI has a boat load of patents that AMD wants. I am baffled.

Huh, if this happens maybe ATI graphics chips will finally stop shipping in Apple laptops.

Intel have always made the chipsets to go with their processors, AMD has relied on others like VIA or more recently ATI and nVIDIA. It makes a certain amount of sense for them to acquire ATI so they can tie chipset development more closely with processor development. This rumour's been around for a while and various sites have commented on the pros and cons of the deal, I think there's an article on ArsTechnica talking about it.

the unification of gpu + cpu is gonna happen some time within 5 - 20 years
thus we could have 4 players competing

removing one of the competition is a good move ( i dont think the market could sustain 4 players as well )

Well, I hope then that their market will remain the same: GFX cards and pc prcocessors. I would feel sad to see one of these two fields being suddently a monopoly.

Of course, I hope that they will be able to keep that working, otherwise we will have 2 filds with monopoly :-(

I heard about that as well. I personally don't like the idea. It will probably make finding an intel system that performs just as well as an AMD system with Ati video hardware harder to achive.

I also read this Ars. As Ravuya said, maybe Apple is turning away from Ati and going with nVidia? Very interesting.

Quite surprising. I think this can only harm ATi and AMD. What is the point of this?? Looks like there will be no more ATi chipsets for Intel's processors, and will nVidia continue to create AMD chipsets, which are the best chipsets around?

EDIT: Remember that if there are no ATi chipsets for Intel, Crossfire will suffer greatly, while Intel will still have the two best chipsets makers (themselves and nVidia).

Very surprised. Crossfire for Intel will definitely suffer greatly. I just hope that they are going to share technology and funds, having an AMD-branded graphics card just erks me.

Ok, each article uses a different term: So is this a merger, or an acquisition?
There's quite a bit of difference between those, and I don't think AMD has the money to buy ATI (or ATI to buy AMD)
